Week 2

Week 2 - Reflection from the mat....

Going into the challenge, Alex felt apprehensive as his spasticity has increased since his wrestling days and there were real questions about how his body would respond. However, once the rolls began those concerns quickly faded.

Alex set himself a target of completing 24 rolls during the shift. He exceeded that goal, finishing 31 – including an opening roll that lasted around 15 minutes. It was a powerful reminder of how much is still possible when limits are challenged.

Reconnecting with long-time black belts Joel and Comp (Luke Spencer) brought back memories from Bannatyne’s gym more than 25 years ago, formative years that helped shape who they are today. One particularly meaningful moment came when Comp awarded Alex his black belt for his final roll, an honour made even more special coming from an old teammate. Alongside Sean, they created an atmosphere that was welcoming, supportive and inclusive throughout the challenge.

The sense of unity within the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community was unmistakable. Old faces and new came together with respect and camaraderie, carrying everyone through even the quiet graveyard hours… helped by an early morning UFC fight on the TV around 4am!

Despite nursing a hand injury picked up the night before, Alex pushed on, aware of the need to balance determination with care. The challenge served as a reminder that stepping outside comfort zones often brings both risk and reward.

Above all, Alex drew lasting comfort from the spirit shown by everyone involved. The friendships formed, shared determination and collective support reinforced just how special the BJJ community is.

Alex takes on these challenges for two reasons: to show others living with MND that resilience and purpose do not disappear as circumstances change and to raise awareness and support individuals/families affected by MND.

If his efforts even help one family to feel supported, every tough moment on the mat is worth it.
